Operating room facilities utilized by the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery include 4 days per week in a state-of-the-art operating room for both ambulatory and inpatient surgical services. In addition to standard plastic surgery equipment, the plastic surgery theatre is equipped with a new Zeiss microscope, modular hand and craniofacial plating systems, as well as traditional and ultrasonic liposuction machines. Outpatients are seen in an efficient 6-station Ambulatory Care Clinic utilized by the Division 3 days per week, and a 2-bed minor surgery theatre outfitted with its own power equipment and fluorscan machine. The Division is supported by a strong Outpatient Rehabilitation Department with 3 full-time dedicated hand therapists. A highly experienced Wound/Ostomy nurse also plays a key role in patient care both in the ambulatory and inpatient settings.

Opportunities for plastic surgery resident learning and clinical experience at MGH are abundant. The hospital has 515 inpatient beds and provides 10.4% of the acute care activity in the Toronto Central LHIN including 238,000 ambulatory visits and 151,000 inpatient days per year. The emergency department at MGH is the second busiest in the Toronto Central LHIN (61,000 visits per year) and has just completed a multi-million dollar expansion. At MGH, residents are exposed to a broad range of plastic surgery issues in the OR, clinics, minor surgery, emergency and inpatient units. Areas of exposure include elective breast surgery, breast reconstruction, elective and traumatic hand and peripheral nerve surgery, benign and malignant cutaneous surgery, low-velocity craniofacial injuries, as well as soft tissue infections, wound care, aesthetic surgery, and common paediatric plastic surgery issues. Members of the Division have specific expertise in breast reconstruction, hand and peripheral nerve surgery, as well as aesthetic surgery.
