Dr. Joan Lipa appointed as Chair of the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Department of Surgery

Dear colleagues,

I am happy to formally announce that following a competitive international search, Dr. Joan Lipa has been appointed as our new Chair of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Joan Lipa

As we welcome Dr. Lipa to her new role, I would also like to express our thanks to Dr. Mitch Brown for his exceptional leadership as Interim Chair over the last couple of years, during which the Division attained the highest surgical standards and recognition, both locally and internationally.

Dr. Lipa practices at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, with a clinical focus on reconstruction for patients with breast cancer within the Louise Temerty Breast Cancer Centre. Her academic role is that of surgeon-investigator, and she is appointed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery. Her current scholarly work focuses on education for delivery of high quality, equitable care.

Dr. Lipa serves as a Senior Examiner and is the past Chair of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, and has served in multiple leadership roles, including President, of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.

On behalf of the Department of Surgery community members, I congratulate Dr. Lipa on her record of academic achievement, culminating in this important appointment. I look forward to seeing the Division of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery flourish under her leadership.

Yours,

Carol Swallow
